Football trials in Nigeria

Most pages about trials in Nigeria are stale lists or adverts for camps that charge before they deliver. A trial is one route into organized football, not the only one. Scouts increasingly find players through verified video and profiles first, then invite them; the safest position is to be findable all year, not only on trial day.

Run this check before any trial

  • Verify the organizer exists beyond social media: a real venue, named coaches, and a working official page.
  • Register only through the organizer's own official channels, never through a WhatsApp number from a repost or a stranger's DM.
  • Treat any fee as a decision point: what exactly does it cover, and does the organizer deliver it visibly to others?
  • A trial that promises a contract or a move abroad in exchange for payment is a scam, every time.
  • Never hand over your passport or original documents; bring copies if documents are requested.

In the weeks before

  • Start four to six weeks out. Build match fitness with short sprints and repeated efforts, not only long slow runs: trials are judged in bursts.
  • Sharpen what you will be tested on: first touch under pressure, passing with both feet, and checking your shoulder before the ball arrives.
  • Play real matches as often as you can. Coaches can tell a player who only trains alone from one who plays every week.
  • In the final week, sleep well, eat properly and drink enough water. Do not break in new boots or change your routine right before the day.

On the day

  • Arrive early, check in, and warm up properly on your own if nobody leads a warm-up.
  • Bring boots for firm and soft ground, shin guards, water and a snack, plus copies (not originals) of your birth certificate or ID and a passport photograph.
  • Coaches watch more than goals: how you move without the ball, how quickly you decide, how you talk to teammates and how you react after a mistake.
  • Play your real position and keep it simple. One clean, brave decision beats three tricks that lose the ball.
  • Before you leave, ask how and when they will contact players, and note the name of the coach you spoke to.

After the trial

  • Keep training and playing while you wait. Clubs sometimes call weeks later.
  • If you were not picked, politely ask for one thing to work on. Most coaches will answer, and that answer is your plan for the next trial.
  • Write down what went well and what did not while it is fresh, then build your next few weeks of training around it.

Are football trials in Nigeria free?

Some are free and many academy screenings charge a published fee. A fee alone does not make an event fake, but it moves the burden of proof: verify the organizer, the venue and what the fee covers before paying anything.

How do I get invited to a football trial without an agent?

Most open tryouts and screenings accept direct registration; no agent is needed. For invitation-only trials, clubs invite through coaches and scouting channels, which is where visible organized football and a verified profile with current video do the work an agent would.

What should I bring to a football trial in Nigeria?

Whatever the organizer publishes, typically boots, shin guards, water, and copies of your birth certificate or ID and a passport photograph. Bring copies, not originals, and keep proof of any payment you make.

What happens if I am not selected at a trial?

Nothing final. Selection days are narrow samples, and players are regularly picked up later through leagues, tournaments and video. Keep playing organized football, keep your footage current, and treat every trial as one data point rather than a verdict.
